Quick Tips for Dog NAIL Trims
When in doubt- have a professional groomer or veterinarian clip your dog's nails.
By doing regular nail trims- every 4 weeks; the quick inside the nail will recede allowing the nails to be trimmed shorter the next time. This also allows your dog to walk more naturally as long nails cause pressure on the paws as they are constantly on an incline which is quite uncomfortable.
Prepare your dog for nail trims by practicing it in steps. Have your dog stand in front of you perpendicularly why you practice sliding your hand gently down the leg to the paw, picking up the paw and bending it backwards so you can see the paw pad. Hold for 3 to 5 seconds and then reward with a treat. Repeat the exercise and as your dog gets more comfortable and less wiggly, hold for longer periods of time. Once you accomplish this, the next step is to apply pressure with your fingers or a nail clipper to each nail while you hold the dog's paw so they can get used to the sensation. Allow your dog to see the clipper and reward, creating a positive association with the tool that needs to be used.
